Peterborough Christmas Lights switch on WILL take place this year - with or without sponsors
The latest heat-wave may just have finished – and Peterborough is still in the middle of a drought – but thoughts are already starting to turn towards Christmas.
In just a few months time preparations for the big day will be well underway, with festive songs being played in all the shops, and Christmas Trees starting to appear in windows.
And Peterborough City Council have confirmed that there will be a big celebration in Cathedral Square in 2026.
In previous years, the authority has put a plea out for sponsors to come forward to help fund the big night – but this year, they have said it will go ahead, with or without sponsors.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We will always work with organisations that want to sponsor our Christmas events and activities as this reduces the overall cost for taxpayers. However, the events will go ahead whether costs can be covered by sponsorship or not.
“Sponsoring the city's Christmas celebrations is a great chance for organisations to promote themselves and reach thousands of families who attend the switch-on event and follow the council on social media. Various packages are available ranging in cost to suit different size businesses. For anyone interested in finding out more email [email protected]”
A date for the big lights switch on has not yet been confirmed. Last year it took place on Friday, November 21.
The council is also appealing for market stall holders to come forward for the Christmas celebrations.
A spokesperson said: “Calling all makers, bakers, creators and traders!
“Could your business be part of this year's Peterborough Christmas Market?
“Whether you sell handcrafted gifts, festive treats, unique homeware or something a little different, we'd love to hear from you.
“Join thousands of visitors in the heart of the city and be part of the magic this Christmas.
“What you need to know:
“Trade for one day or the full weekend, the choice is yours.
“Electricity is available at selected pitches.
“Bring your own gazebo or small trading vehicle.
“There's no commitment to apply, and every application will be considered on its own merit.
“To apply or find out more, email [email protected] or [email protected]”
