Neighbours rally to save German Shepherds Mia and Mali from euthanasia

Neighbours in Fenland have come together in a bid to save two abandoned German Shepherd dogs from the threat of euthanasia.

The two Czech German Shepherds- Mia and Mali- were found at an address in Marshland St James last week after police were called there with reports of concerns for their welfare amidst the heat.

There were three dogs at the property- the third has been placed into a safe home- but the Mia and Mali remain and ever since the discovery and the fact that no owner was present, neighbours have been working on a rotational basis to take core of the dogs.

After police attended, the matter was handed to the RSPCA but due to the legal complexities surrounding the property, its ownership, and responsibility for the dogs, immediate intervention has been limited.

It is believed that one of the owners was forced to move back to Latvia and left the care of the dogs to a person who would arrange their transportation but this did not materialise.

As well as rallying to feed and walk the dogs, residents have taken on the task of raising money to have the dogs and owner reunited, however, funds must be raised in order to ensure that the dogs are out of the home at the end of the week as it is the subject of an eviction notice.

Therefore the dogs are likely to be seized and euthanised if they are still there when bailiffs arrive. It is said that the owner is ‘devastated and distraught’ and doing everything she can to coordinate care of the dogs from abroad.

Efforts have been launched to raise £3,000.

The page states: “Mia and Mali will be welcomed into two loving homes in Latvia, one with the owner herself and her 9 year old daughter and one with her mother and father. The girls will be close, cared for, and surrounded by the people they know as family.

"The property is subject to a bailiff eviction. If Mia and Mali are still there when bailiffs arrive, they will be removed and placed into the system and we cannot guarantee their safety from that point.

“We are unsure of Mia and Mali's vaccination status. Before they legally enter Latvia, they require a full course of vaccinations including rabies, which under EU regulations requires a mandatory 21 day window before travel can commence.

“Even if they are vaccinated this week, they cannot legally enter Latvia until late July at the earliest.

“To make it possible, Mia and Mali need:Safe temporary boarding while arrangements are made (approx. 6 weeks), Full veterinary examinations and any treatment required, vaccinations, health certification, and travel documents, food, supplies, and daily care, safe transport to Latvia.

“We want to be honest with you. If reuniting them turns out to be impossible, whether due to veterinary requirements, logistics, or finances, every single penny raised will go towards their ongoing care and finding them a permanent, loving home here in the UK.

“Every donation goes directly towards boarding, veterinary care, travel, and the documentation needed to bring Mia and Mali home. If donating isn't possible right now, sharing this page costs nothing and could make all the difference.

“Should there be any surplus funds remaining once Mia and Mali are safe, every penny will be donated to between a local animal welfare and homelessness charity. Because every life in this story matters.

“They've already waited long enough. Let's get them home.”
