Green light for purchase of £5 million new electric bus depot in Peterborough

The green light has been given for the £5 million purchase of land in Peterborough for a new electric bus depot.

It means that work can now start on buying the site in Fengate that will eventually be developed so it can replace the city’s current bus depot in Lincoln Road.

It is understood the former BCA car auction site at Boongate will be the home for the new fully electric bus depot.

The decision to buy has been driven through the Combined Authority Board by leading members of Peterborough City Council and the Combined Authority mayor Paul Bristow.

The new hub will enable better bus services to be provided with the future expansion of the fleet including electric buses as well as being able to support a future franchised bus network.

Councillor Shabina Qayyum, the city council leader, said: “I voted as leader of one of the principal transport authorities for the Combined Authority to purchase the land that is needed to relocate the bus depot from Lincoln Road.

"This is a huge step forward and would not have been possible without the collaborative working culture we have fostered.

"Now we will be working actively to look at how we develop the vacant site.
