The former Fifth Avenue nightclub in Laxton Square, near the city market, received planning permission a year ago to be converted into co-living accommodation featuring a gym, cinema room, games areas, communal lounges, roof garden and 24 hour concierge service.

The aim was to target the Millennial generation, but the plans may be scuppered by the Covid crisis according to a newly submitted planning application by The Brightfield Group which is seeking permission to convert the derelict building into a hotel.

A planning statement submitted to Peterborough City Council states: “The application is an alternative to the co-living use granted planning consent in July 2019 to allow flexibility given the as yet unknown long-term impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Pre-start works on that scheme including strip out and roof repairs have commenced.”

The proposed hotel would include 68 rooms and “associated guest facilities”.

The former nightclub has been vacant since 2002. The building was constructed in 1873 as a county court, which it remained until 1986.

Co-living is already a feature in the US and in European cities such as Berlin and Barcelona, as well as London, but has yet to feature in Peterborough.
