Eleven Peterborough schools sign up for breakfast clubs

Eleven Peterborough schools have signed up to take part in a breakfast club scheme to ensure children get the best possible start to the day.

From September, families across Peterborough will see a real change to their mornings, and their household budgets, as eleven schools roll out new free breakfast clubs to their pupils.

The Beeches Primary School, NeneGate, Paston Ridings Primary School, Gladstone Primary Academy, Lime Academy Parnwell, Welbourne Primary Academy, Gunthorpe Primary School, Richard Barnes Academy, Lime Academy Watergall, St Thomas More Catholic Primary School andThorpe Primary Academy join Highlees Primary School, which is already running the free clubs.

Part of Labour’s Best Start programme, these new clubs will mean hundreds more children sitting down to a proper breakfast at school every day – something not every child does at the moment – while parents save up to £450 a year on food and childcare costs.

MP for Peterborough, Andrew Pakes said: “I’ve been working hard in Westminster to get Labour’s Best Start free breakfast clubs into Peterborough’s schools and I’m delighted that we are going to be welcoming eleven new free breakfast clubs in September.

“Every child deserves the benefits of a nutritious breakfast before school, regardless of finance. And so many parents appreciate that little bit of extra time on a busy morning. This expansion means hundreds more families in Peterborough will benefit from free breakfast clubs.

“I know that many families are feeling the pinch, and these new clubs will sit alongside savings on family summer fun and welcome action on the cost of school uniform to cut costs for families.”

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson added: “No parent should have to choose between a summer day out to the beach and kitting their child out for school. From September, families will feel the difference at the school gates: free breakfast clubs at 1,400 more schools, an end to expensive lists of branded uniform, and more free lunches for those who need them. That’s the British childhood this government believes in, and why we’ll always fight to give every child the very best start in life.”
