Efforts underway to restore WWII tank buried buried under street near Peterborough after 74 years to full working order

Efforts are currently underway to restore a tank found buried under a street near Peterborough for 74 years to full working order.

In 2021, the Buffalo LVT4 landing vehicle was discovered in Crowland and dug up following a three-year operation thanks to the work of farmer Daniel Abbott, North Level Internal Drainage Board (NLIDB), Crowland Cranes and Tear’s Recovery.

The amphibious vehicle was placed at the banks of the River Welland after the river burst its banks in March 1947 and flooded large areas of farmland.

They were used to form a temporary barrier but as the water was pumped away, several floated away and became subject to local legend about whether their existence was real or not.

Having recovered the Buffalo, the registered charity Crowland Buffalo LVT Association is undertaking efforts to get the tank working on its own tracks once again to allow it to be fully operational at events around the country.

The Buffalo was Winston Churchill escort vehicle across the Rhine in 1945.

Daniel Abbott said: “This is the only LVT4 in operation with the UK.

"We need to raise a massive 10k to get this Buffalo tracking around events if everyone donated £1, it would go along way towards our goal for the upcoming winter.

“I understand the world is in a mess but if I don't ask i don't get. If anyone could assist us in any way to locate funding it would be very much appreciated.

“We have come a long way since April 2021.”

"Transportation of the Buffalo is not an easy task as the Buffalo sits on a trailer We are greatful to Park Farm Thorney as they have a Telehandler the right size.

"Without this support or the events covering the cost of transport you would not be able to see the Buffalo at these events so I am asking if the donations could continue coming in as we are very close to seeing this Buffalo running on its tracks."
