BREAKING: Peterborough Family Games Festival cancelled after heavy rain and thunderstorms hit city
The event has been cancelled in the interest of safety
The Peterborough Family Festival has been cancelled after heavy rain and thunderstorms hit the city.
Scheduled to take place at the Athletics Track between 10am and 2pm today (Thursday, August 27), the event promised a day of games and activities.
However, Peterborough City Council confirmed at 10.30am that the event has been cancelled.

A Peterborough City Council spokesperson said: “We’re really sorry to let families know that, due to the continued forecast for heavy rain and thunderstorms, we have had to cancel today’s planned Family Festival activities.
“This is not a decision we have taken lightly, but the safety of families, residents, staff and volunteers must come first.
“Due to the location and facilities at the athletics track, the activities cannot be held safely under cover, so we are unable to go ahead as planned.
“Families are still very welcome to come down between 12pm and 2pm to collect hot food in a takeaway container, although please be aware there is nowhere to sit and eat at the Athletics Track. “Food will be available until 2pm or until it runs out, whichever comes first.
“We’re very sorry for the disappointment this will cause. Unfortunately, the weather is outside of our control, and we have to make the safest decision for everyone attending.”
Peterborough remains under a Met Office warning for thunderstorms until 10pm this evening.
Accumulations of 20-30 mm in an hour is possible locally, while 30 to 40 mm can be expected fairly widely and up to 50 mm in a 12 hour period in places, according to the warning.
