"Biggest and most spectacular" festival set for heritage site in Peterborough

Hundreds of ‘Vikings’ are set to entertain visitors at Flag Fen Archaeology Park in Peterborough for this year's Viking Festival.

The action-packed, living history event – taking place from May 2-4 – offers visitors the chance to step back in time and experience the sights, sounds and drama of the Viking world.

A spokesperson for the site said: “350 Vikings will descend on the park this Early May Bank Holiday weekend for the return of our biggest and most spectacular event of the year - Viking Festival 2026.

“From authentic encampments and hands-on activities to epic battle re-enactments, the festival promises an unforgettable day out for families, history enthusiasts and first-time visitors alike.”

Visitors can enjoy weapons demonstrations, archery displays and even have a go at archery themselves. Axe throwing will also be available for those wanting to test their Viking strength (a small additional charge applies).

For younger visitors, there’s plenty more to enjoy – with a range of child-friendly activities designed to spark imagination and bring history to life. Children can explore a Viking grave, enjoy dedicated storytelling sessions, and even take part in a children’s battle experience (aged 5 to 12), perfect for budding young warriors.

The spokesperson continued: “The highlight of each day will be the dramatic re-enactment of The Battle of the Holme, fought in East Anglia on 13 December 902 between the Anglo-Saxon men of Wessex and Kent and the Danelaw forces. Watch as skilled re-enactors charge into battle, swords flashing and shields clashing, recreating the intensity of early medieval warfare.”

Visitors can also wander through a bustling Viking camp and discover what life was really like over 1,000 years ago, learn about Viking food, crafts and daily life, and see traditional woodworking, metalworking, cooking and weaving live in action.
