‘A special experience’: Skydivers get breathtaking view of solar eclipse over Peterborough

The lucky skydivers were afforded breathtaking views

Dozens of skydivers were able to enjoy Wednesday’s (August 12) rare solar eclipse from a unique perspective over Peterborough.

A total of 34 skydivers watched the eclipse from high above the city after taking off from Sibson Airfield.

After climbing to altitude, the skydivers timed their freefall to coincide with the peak of the eclipse itself.

Hannah Cooper, who photographed the skydivers as they watched the eclipse, told the Peterborough Telegraph: “It was a pretty special experience all round and almost eerie watching the shadows darken across the landscape as we enjoyed the views from 13,000ft.”

During the eclipse, between 90-96% of the sun will be covered by the moon for the first time in the UK since 1999.

After this week's event, the UK will not see another deep partial solar eclipse until 2050, while the next total solar eclipse visible from the UK is not due until 2090.
