5-year-old 'eco-warrior' from Peterborough to cycle over 15 miles in support of cleaning up the world's oceans

A five-year-old ‘eco warrior’ from Peterborough is going to be taking on an epic bike ride to help keep the oceans on the world clean.

Eli will be going the extra mile this October in a bid to support a charity and a cause close to his heart.

The five-year-old has decided that he will ride between 15 and 17 miles around Rutland Water to support The Ocean Cleanup; a not for profit organization that works to develop advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic and keep them clean.

Eli, who is a self-described eco-warrior is extremely concerned with the amount of plastic and other rubbish that it being dumped into the ocean and endangering all sea life and especially his favourite animals, turtles.

In a video message, Eli has asked people to support his cause stating that ‘humans produce 400 million tonnes of plastic waste each year’ and that 40% of the sea’s surface is covered in plastic.’ This is turn causes the death of 1.1 million sea birds and marine animals each year.

Eli often carries out his own little picking sessions on his bike after school and is no stranger to charity fundraising. At the age of four, he cycles 10k- just months after learning how to ride his bike- to raise £1,000 for charity Rhinos International.

He said: “I often carry out my own litter picking sessions during my days off school. Alongside this bike ride I will be working hard to collect as much litter in my local area as I can in order to prevent the plastic from reaching the ocean.

My family and I will be cycling 15-17 miles around the hilly Rutland water in October to raise as much money as I can. This money will be going to a brilliant charity 'The Ocean Cleanup' who work very hard to remove and recycle floating plastics around the world.

“Please can you sponsor me for this event every £1 will make a huge difference.

“Please reduce, reuse and recycle and help me to keep the oceans clean!”
