100 vacancies expected to be up for grabs at jobs fair to be held in Peterborough

About 100 job vacancies are expected to be up for grabs at a careers fair to be held in Peterborough.

Some 20 companies have already booked to attend the Job Fairs that will take place this summer.

The event is being hosted by National Job Fairs and will be held on July 10 at the Weston Homes Stadium, in London Road.

The event will be the supplier of ingredients for pastry, bakery, IRCA Manufacturing UK, based in Coningsby Road, Bretton.

A spokesperson said: “We usually see 15 to 20 companies at the Jobs Fair.”

News of the jobs fair comes in the wake of statistics that show the number of employees on company payrolls in Peterborough fell over the last year.

Researchers at Wagesight say recent data shows the number of employees on company payrolls in Peterborough in February was 103,790, down 180 at -0.2 per cent on the same month last year.

Compared with other local authorities in the East of England, Peterborough ranks 28th out of 42, placing it among the weakest performers for employment change.

The trend in Peterborough reflects a mixed employment picture across the East of England, with some areas reporting improvements while others continue to see pressure on payroll numbers.

Charlotte Horobin, chief executive of Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “The recruitment market has been dampened for some time.

"The economy is flat and it’s tough for employers.”

She said increases in National Insurance, wages and new employee rights meant recruiting new staff was more costly and more of a risk, with employment rights starting six months after an employee joining instead of the previous two years.
