Political View: Working together for Peterborough

Local government works best when people are willing to put aside their differences and focus on what really matters, writes LibDem councillor Andrew Bond.
Delivering for residents and making decisions that support our communities. While politics will always involve debate, I have always believed the best outcomes come when councillors are prepared to work constructively together.
That approach has been especially clear in recent months as the council has worked to set a balanced budget. Through the Financial Stability Working Group (FSWG), councillors from across the chamber and most political parties have participated in discussions to ensure Peterborough remains on a stable financial footing. Reaching a balanced budget is never easy in the current climate, but by working collaboratively and listening to different perspectives, we have been able to make responsible decisions for the city.
As Liberal Democrats, we believe strongly in this kind of teamwork. Being prepared to work with others does not mean stepping back from standing up for Peterborough and our wards. It means focusing on practical solutions and making sure the interests of local residents come first.
I see the same spirit of cooperation in my role as Vice Chairman of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Fire Authority, a role I am incredibly proud to hold. The Fire Authority brings together representatives from different councils and political backgrounds, but our shared priority is clear. Keeping our communities safe.
The Authority's work affects residents across the whole county, and it is important that decisions on resources, prevention work, and future planning are made carefully. Wherever possible, there is a real effort to reach consensus to make good decisions in the best interests of the communities we serve.
Closer to home, I continue to focus on the issues that matter most to residents in my ward, which covers Gunthorpe, South Werrington and Manor Drive. Listening to residents and understanding their concerns is at the heart of good local representation and helps ensure the work we do reflects the priorities of the communities we serve.
At this time of year, politics can sometimes feel like a competition over who can shout the loudest on Facebook. Social media has its place, but I believe residents are better served when councillors focus on the work that matters most. Listening to residents, working constructively with colleagues and delivering practical results.
That has always been my approach, and I will continue to take it as I stand for re-election on May 7 alongside my colleagues, Cllr Christian Hogg and Cllr Asif Shaheed. I hope you will continue to put your trust in us as we work collaboratively to stand up for our communities. Together, we are a strong voice for Peterborough.
