Local Elections 2026: Local representation should be active, visible and accountable

With the City Council Elections just two weeks away, I want to highlight one of the Conservative candidates standing on May 7th, writes group deputy leader Steve Allen.

Dr Ivelina Banyalieva is our choice for Paston & Walton. She is standing because she believes the area deserves strong, active representation that delivers — and, as a mother, she cares deeply about the future we are building for our children.

“I reached a point where I could no longer stand on the sidelines,” she says. “I want to play my part in shaping a safer, stronger community for my daughter and for every family in our area.”

Through her work, community involvement and daily conversations with residents, Iva understands both the strengths of Paston & Walton and the real challenges people face. She is clear in her approach: representation must be active, visible and accountable. Listening is important — but it must be followed by action and results.

Recently, Iva met an elderly couple on Windrush Drive. The lady, who struggles with mobility, was unable to leave her home to renew her Blue Badge. Iva returned, completed the application digitally, and took the required photograph herself. The badge has now been approved and delivered.

This is what real representation looks like — being there when residents need help, especially those who need it most.

“Residents should feel proud of those who represent them. We are here to be your voice in the council, to stand up for your concerns and ensure they are heard.”

Iva highlights the importance of voting, reminding residents that if they don’t vote, they allow others to make that decision on their behalf.

“Coming into politics in Peterborough, I want to bring a new approach — one focused on solutions, not blame. People want action, honesty and delivery.”

Iva brings a strong professional background, supported by her law degree, giving her the confidence to challenge poor decisions and hold the council to account. Combined with her business experience, she understands responsibility, efficiency and the importance of delivering results.

Her priorities are clear and focused on everyday life: improving access to free regular dental check-ups for children and the elderly; tackling speeding in residential areas; improving parks and play areas; introducing four free bulky waste collections per year; and working closely with police to cut antisocial behaviour.

Working in the ward alongside Cllr Alex Rafiq, she has already shown what strong teamwork can achieve — delivering, engaging and standing up for residents. Together, they will bring energy, dedication and a shared vision — quite simply, double the effort and a stronger voice for the community.

This election is about trust. It is about choosing someone who will stand up for your area and deliver real outcomes. I believe Iva Banyalieva is that candidate.
