Local Elections 2026: Greens confident of election success

The Peterborough Green party are confident of increasing our tally of councillors at the elections next week. As ever, we will be big on Green issues, writes Barry Warne.

The Embankment is a much loved Green area in the centre of the city, but the Combined Authority Major remains insistent that he is going to concrete it over with a community stadium.

It would be great for Posh to have a new ground, but not at the cost of a huge asset to our city centre. The Embankment could and should be so much more. Though it is well used, especially during the summer, with concerts, funfairs and of course our amazing beer festival which has called the Embankment home for many years.

It would be great if more community activities were set up. Perhaps a return to boat and canoe hire on the river, with a cafe and other food and drink outlets. We hope the Mayor intends to find out what the mood is in Peterborough towards the Embankment being dominated by a community stadium. It would probably not be as popular as he thinks.

In her capacity as Chair of the Peterborough Economy, Inclusive Growth and Environment Committee, Orton Waterville Green Cllr Nicola Day recently visited the Green Skills Technology Centre at Peterborough Regional College. She was shown some of the new technologies which students are being trained in, including heat pumps, electric vehicles and solar panels. Cllr Day reflected on how good it is to see that the Green Skills Centre is offering forward thinking courses of regional significance, and that demand for these courses are outstripping supply. The plan is for links to be developed between education providers, organisations, the manufacturing sector and the local authority.

Anglia Ruskin University has plans in their next phase to provide a focus on green technology and skills for the future. Cllr Day said “I’m excited to be working on this and will push hard to ensure that Peterborough is leading the way in this sector. I look forward to exploring the possibilities and seeing how this project progresses.”

Orton Longueville Green Cllr Heather Skibsted is the chair of the Peterborough Cycle Forum. Peterborough has a great network of cycle paths, many dating back to the days of the Development Corporation. Sadly maintenance of the network has not been all it might be. Tree roots, subsidence and overhanging bushes are amongst the issues that are compromising the safety of cyclists on these paths. One of the goals of the forum is to make maintenance of the network a key priority for the council.

Green issues are important in Peterborough, but there is so much more which concerns the Peterborough residents. Fly tipping, littering and getting value for money for our council tax are all things which most people are big on. Also getting more police officers on the beat is a hugely important issue. Please consider voting Green at the Council Elections. Issues which concern you also concern us.
