Peterborough school begins work to fence off area of 'Werrington fields' after long-running dispute
Work has begun to fence off a large area of ‘Werrington Fields’ following a long-running dispute.
Residents had fought both the Four Cs Academy Trust as well as Peterborough City Council since 2019 to prevent a large parcel of land around Ken Stimpson Academy being fenced off and leased to the school.
The land, which is about the size of about eight football pitches and has come to be known as Werrington Fields, has been available for public use for the past 45 years.
The trust has always maintained its need for the land for sports provision, and that the area must be properly fenced off to safeguard pupils.

A final vote was taken on the matter in March 2026, with the council voting to enter into a Community Use Agreement with the trust that will enable Area C to be used by the community at specified times after school and at weekends.
Campaigners have raised concerns about a large number of residents now being denied access to the fields altogether but they have been left with no further recourse.
Work on the fence has begun to fence off the area. The council specifically stated that it would leave an “an unfenced perimeter that measures 10 metres to the eastern boundary; 15.5 metres to the south, and 20 metres to the west for public open space.”
