Clean up operation underway on Peterborough street as mound of rubbish left following bin lorry fire
A clean up operation has taken place on a residential street in Peterborough following a bin lorry fire on Thursday morning (November 13).
The bin lorry caught fire on its morning rounds in Gunthorpe and was forced to empty out the rubbish that had been previously collected.
This left a section of Hallfields Lane, just off Gunthorpe Road covered in rubbish.
Peterborough Limited crews arrived on the scene quickly to begin the clear up operation in the early afternoon.

The cause of the fire has been established to be batteries and electricals which were thrown away.
Peterborough City Council said: “This morning, one of our bin lorries caught fire while travelling along Hallfields Lane, Gunthorpe. Fortunately the crew are all ok and there was no damage to the vehicle, but it obviously caused a delay to the round. The fire was caused by batteries being incorrectly disposed of with other waste.
“We’d like to remind residents that household batteries must be placed in a clear plastic bag and left on top of your bin lid—they should never go inside the bin. Batteries can also be recycled at the Household Recycling Centre.”
