War memorial in Peterborough vandalised by graffiti

Graffiti has been scrawled on a war memorial in Peterborough.

A bench inscribed the words of the Laurence Binyon poem ‘For the Fallen’ which is often read allowed during Armistice Day commemorations located just off Braymere Road in Hampton was among the targets of vandals with red and orange paint.

As second bench and a nearby tree were also hit by the vandals, who completely painted over the words inscribed on the memorial bench.

The damage to the bench was discovered over the weekend causing ‘emotional distress’ among residents, according to the parish council.

A spokesperson for the council said: “The War Memorial in Hampton — an important symbol of remembrance and reflection for the community — has sadly been subjected to an act of vandalism.

“The damage has since caused understandable concern among residents, visitors, and those who use the memorial as a place to honour the sacrifices of service personnel.

"War memorials serve as focal points for community remembrance, offering a quiet and respectful space to reflect on the contributions of those who served. Incidents like this not only cause physical damage but also emotional distress for those who value and care for the site.

"Hampton Parish Council will continue to monitor the situation and work with local authorities to ensure the memorial remains protected, respected, and preserved for future generations."

The incident has been reported to the police and anyone who may have relevant information has been urged to report it using the non‑emergency number 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
