Visiting had been allowed at the privately run jail - the only prison in the country with a male and a female wing - but now those visits have had to be cancelled.

Damian Evans, director at HMP Peterborough, said: “We continue to work to guidelines published by Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service for the whole prison and probation system, which in turn are informed by Public Health England.

"In line with arrangements for all prisons while national restrictions apply, we have suspended all social visits. To support contact with family and friends we offer prisoners access to video calls, as well as the ‘Email-a-Prisoner’ system, letters and telephone calls.

"The safety and wellbeing of our staff and residents remains our priority, with extensive measures in place to minimise the impact of Covid-19.”
