Dozens of £400 fines for Peterborough fly-tippers under new rules

Nearly 90 people in Peterborough have been fined £400 since the city council adopted new rules.

From April 1 to December 31 last year, 88 people were slapped with Fixed Penalty Notices with residents able to be charged for “breaching their duty of care” when disposing of household waste.

This includes working with unlicensed operators.

Moreover, several cases are being looked into to see if the threshold for prosecution has been met.

If fly-tippers are taken through court magistrates have the powers to fine them up to £50,000 and imprison them for up to a year.

The offence can also attract an unlimited fine and up to five years in prison if an offender is convicted in a crown court.

The council has recently invested in several covert cameras which are being used at hot spot locations across the city.

The £400 FPNs do not include a discount for early repayment.

Previously, the council could only prosecute an individual through court.

Both councillors and MP for Peterborough Paul Bristow have called for tougher penalties for fly-tippers.
