Man jailed after attack on Peterborough pub customer that left victim with life-changing injuries

A man repeatedly punched a Peterborough pub customer before stamping on his head and leaving the victim with life-changing injuries, a court has heard.

Cambridgeshire police say that Jamie Patrick (23) launched the attack at The Fayre Spot pub, at The Cresset, in Bretton, Peterborough, after the victim had gone outside to have a cigarette.

Patrick was sentenced to two years and four months in prison after pleading to GBH with intent at a hearing at Huntingdon Law Courts on January 16.

A police spokesman said: “Patrick followed the 37-year-old man from Grantham outside, punching him from behind so hard he fell to the ground, smashing the glass he was holding.

“Patrick then punched the victim a further four times before stamping on his head.”

Police say there had been a previous conversation between the two as Patrick wandered around the pub talking to various groups of people on February 1, last year.

The victim suffered injuries including a broken jaw and was sent by taxi to Peterborough City Hospital.

However, the next day he was transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, for surgery.

Patrick, of South Parade, Skegness, Lincolnshire, was named as the offender after police issued a CCTV appeal.

Afterwards, DC Sam Moorby said: “The victim had gone outside to have a cigarette and, out of the blue, Patrick ferociously attacked him from behind.

“The victim literally did not see the punch coming and had no opportunity to defend himself.

"He suffered life-changing injuries and may have permanent nerve damage to his face as a result of the unprovoked attack.”
