Blaze off A605 ‘started accidentally’ as firefighters remain at the scene

A blaze which gutted a lorry trailer and forklift truck was started accidentally, firefighters have concluded.

Crews from Whittlesey, Stanground, Dogsthorpe and Yaxley and the water carrier from Ramsey attended Funtham’s Lane off the A605 shortly before midnight last night.

The fire involved pallets and plastics which spread to a lorry trailer and forklift truck, causing the road to be closed for around six hours to protect motorists due to the intensity of the heat.

The fire was finally extinguished at around 6.10am with an investigation then taking place.

This afternoon, a Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The fire investigation has been completed and the fire was found to have started accidentally. One crew still remains at the scene monitoring hotspots and dampening down the area.”

Group Commander Jamie Johnson said: “The high winds made tackling the fire challenging but crews did a great job in bringing it under control and preventing it from spreading further.”
