The centre closed this morning (Tuesday), but a spokesperson said: “Access to essential goods and services remains open and includes Boots, which can be accessed via the Boots Long Causeway entrance and M&S Food, which is accessible via the centre’s Queen Street doors.”

Access to the centre itself has been blocked, with fencing going up this morning.

Car parks have also been closed.

Over the past week, Queensgate has seen the daily closure of retailers.

The spokesperson added: “During this period, Queensgate has continued to support retailers that maintained trading and provided constant updates for shoppers through social media channels, website and email.”

Centre director Mark Broadhead said: “This is an unprecedented and challenging time for us all and we are following the strict guidelines set by the government and Public Health England.

“We strongly ask people not to come into the city centre or gather in groups but instead stay at home and follow the NHS advice at www.nhs.co.uk. Please help us keep people safe by sticking to these simple measures.
