More calls for action to make Oundle Road safer

There will be calls for action to make Oundle Road in Woodston safer – with illegally parked cars and speeding motorists high on the agenda.

Fletton and Woodston ward councillor Ed Murphy will make the call at the Full Council meeting on Wednesday (July 29).

His call comes following the death of a delivery driver on the road in May.

Amjid Javaid, (46) of Gilpin Street, Peterborough died after he was struck by a car in Woodston, near the junction with Jubilee Street.

Speaking to The Peterborough Telegraph, cllr Murphy said: “It isn’t all about speed or traffic calming along there, but in London or Cambridge, it might be a 20mph zone.

“We don’t want to see another incident like the one we had in May here.

"It is also about parking. In London, you wouldn’t have people parking on the pavements. Oundle Road would be a red route. But in Woodston, there are people parking on yellow lines, in untaxed cars.

“We need more enforcement here, to make this road safer.

Cllr Murphy has also raised the subject of the impact that the Queensgate Roundabout works are having on Oundle Road.

In a motion to the council, he is expected to say: “On the 5th of June a report was submitted to the traffic department concerning the implications this (Queensgate works) will have on other areas in Peterborough covering several wards with traffic being diverted down Oundle Road, and that this may continue after the works have been completed exacerbating traffic issues in these areas. The environmental impact will be detrimental, with the use of materials such as concrete and the current cycle and

pedestrian routes which separate vehicles from pedestrians and cyclists being removed.”

Cllr Murphy is expected to call on the council to evaluate the ongoing works in real time and provide improved pedestrian access, particularly from North Thorpe Road into the Railway station as soon as possible to mitigate the need to cross three lanes on Thorpe Road and four lanes on Bourges Boulevard.

A man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving following the death of Mr Javaid. A 52-year-old man from Peterborough answered bail on July 23, and he has been re-bailed until a date in November.
