Free entry to ‘mysterious’ Lyveden National Trust site near Peterborough this weekend

The unusual site dates back to the 16th century

The National Trust is offering free entry to one of its sites near Peterborough this weekend to mark the start of its Festival of Archaeology.

Lyveden New Bield, located between Corby and Oundle, is one of England’s most intriguing Elizabethan estates and dates back 421 years.

Created by Sir Thomas Tresham in the late 16th century, the site is home to an iconic, unfinished Elizabethan lodge and manor house.

Intended to be the pride of Tresham’s estate, work on the building abruptly stopped following his death in 1605.

In the 421 years since Sir Thomas’ death, the house has barely changed and remains one of the National Trust’s most intriguing sites.

On July 18 and 19, for one weekend only, visitors can enjoy free access to the estate and take part in a range of archaeological-themed activities for all ages.

At Camp Lyveden visitors can become archaeologists for the day with a hands-on excavation dig and fun ‘Hook-a-Look’ challenge, designed to test observation skills while uncovering clues from the past.

Those looking for an extra adventure can also try their hand at archery and axe throwing from 11am to 3pm on both days.

Activity tokens cost £2 each and can be purchased from Visitor Reception on arrival.

A spokesperson for the National Trust said: “Lyveden is delighted to welcome visitors to discover everything this treasured National Trust site has to offer during our free entry weekend. “As a predominantly outdoor site, summer is a wonderful time to visit Lyveden, with plenty of space to explore and enjoy the beautiful surroundings while having fun taking part in our family-friendly activities.

“Whether you've never visited before, are a regular visitor or haven't been for some time, we'd love you to come along and join in the fun.

"It's a wonderful opportunity to experience this special place while helping us care for it for generations to come.”
