MP inspires students during visit to Arthur Mellows Village College

North West Cambridgeshire’s Member of Parliament, Sam Carling, visited Arthur Mellows Village College today for a wide-ranging visit focused on education, citizenship and political engagement.
During his time at the college, Mr Carling was given a tour of the school, offering him the opportunity to see lessons in action and to meet staff and students across the site. He also held a meeting with the Headteacher, where discussions centred on the challenges and opportunities facing secondary education, both locally and nationally.
A highlight of the visit was an assembly delivered to sixth-form students, where the MP spoke about his role in Parliament, the importance of civic participation, and the value of young people engaging with politics and public life. Mr Carling pointed out that just 4 years before being elected, he too was a sixth-form student. Students were encouraged to ask questions and think critically about the issues shaping their futures.
Mr Carling also took part in dedicated question-and-answer sessions with Year 10 and 11 citizenship students, as well as Year 12 and 13 politics students. Topics ranged from how laws are made and the realities of representing a constituency, to broader discussions about democracy, public services and current affairs. Staff praised students for their thoughtful and probing questions, and the MP for his open and engaging responses.
Sam Carling was elected as Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire at the 2024 general election. Since entering Parliament, he has spoken about the importance of education, opportunity and ensuring that young people’s voices are heard in national decision-making. His visit formed part of his ongoing engagement with schools and colleges across the constituency.
Arthur Mellows Village College said the visit provided a valuable real-world insight into politics and citizenship, helping to bring classroom learning to life and inspiring students to take an active interest in democracy.
