VE Day celebrations bring wartime spirit to Brampton residents
Spam sandwiches, live music and a traditional street party helped residents at a Brampton care home step back in time as they celebrated VE Day in style.

The event, held at Montague House Care Home, Keeling Lane, marked Victory in Europe Day, which is commemorated annually on 8 May and honours the end of World War II in Europe in 1945.

Residents enjoyed a day filled with live entertainment, singing and a nostalgic spread of food inspired by wartime celebrations.
Resident Phyliss Howard aged 94, said: “What a lovely idea and surprise.”

Fellow resident Marian Johnson, aged 91, was amazed to see the spam sandwiches. She said: “That takes me back a while!”
The celebrations ended with a lively singsong featuring wartime favourites including White Cliffs of Dover and Run Rabbit Run. Residents also enjoyed live entertainment from Cash Edwards, who performed upbeat songs from the 1950s.
Home Manager and former RAF Veteran Paula Yorkston-Toy said: “We tried to capture the community feel of the early street parties and, thanks to the hard work of the kitchen staff and wider team, the residents had a fantastic day.
“VE Day means a great deal to many of our residents, with some remembering the celebrations at the end of the war and others reflecting on the sacrifices made by that generation.
“Days like this are so important because they bring people together and create special moments for our residents and their families.”
