Thomas Deacon Academy celebrates sport, culture, and community through Character Activity Days
Thomas Deacon Academy (TDA), part of the Thomas Deacon Education Trust (TDET) recently brought its Character Curriculum to life through two inspiring Character Activity Days, rounding off the academic year with a celebration of sport, culture, identity and the values that shape the academy.

Across two vibrant days, students demonstrated confidence, courage, commitment and courtesy through a varied programme of athletics, team sports, cultural performances and community-led activities designed to showcase TDA’s rich cultural diversity.
A highlight of the event was a visit from two-time Winter Paralympian Sean Rose, who shared his remarkable sporting journey with students before presenting character awards. Sean spoke about overcoming challenges, developing resilience and striving for excellence, inspiring young people to pursue their goals with determination and courage.

Emily Gaunt, Principal at Thomas Deacon Academy, said: “These two days showcased the strength of our academy community and the pride our students take in who they are. It was wonderful to see students demonstrating confidence, courtesy and a real sense of togetherness.”
The second day focused on culture and celebration, giving students the opportunity to proudly share their heritage and identity. The academy came alive with music, poetry, traditional dress, flags and cultural performances, creating an atmosphere of inclusion and mutual respect.
One of the most memorable moments saw students take part in a catwalk show, confidently showcasing clothing while sharing stories about their backgrounds. Through music, drumming, performances and presentations, students celebrated the many cultures that make up the academy community.
The event also included a special session recognising and celebrating the Roma Gypsy heritage of some TDA students, highlighting the importance of understanding, representation and belonging. Delivered by Petr Torak MBE, the session encouraged students to learn more about each other’s cultures and experiences.

Colm McCloskey, Assistant Principal at Thomas Deacon Academy, said: “Our Character Activity Days are a powerful reflection of what we stand for at TDA. We want our students to develop not only academically, but also as confident, courageous, and compassionate young people. Seeing students celebrate their cultures, support one another in sport and embrace new experiences so enthusiastically was truly inspiring.”
The Character Activity Days formed part of TDA’s wider commitment to developing young people who are prepared to make a positive contribution to their academy, their community and the wider world.
