Peterborough father and daughter take on Three Peaks challenge by rail

Guy Dangerfield (56) and daughter Lucy (19) from Orton Longueville will attempt to climb the three highest mountains in England, Wales and Scotland in just 36 hours this week.   The Three Peaks Challenge by Rail ( https://www.railwaychildren.org.uk/events/three-peaks-by-rail) raises funds for the Railway Children (https://www.railwaychildren.org.uk), a charity working in the UK, India & Tanzania to identify young people at risk of harm at and around railway and bus stations.

Guy, who works for Transport Focus (https://www.transport.focus.org.uk) the independent watchdog for transport users, first dreamt of attempting the challenge 20 years ago.  “Back then, my wife was expecting our second child and the baby’s due date was too close to the climb for me to take part. It’s a dream come true in 2026 to finally attempt the challenge with that baby!  The train leaves Crewe on the evening of Thursday 25 June and travels to Snowdon, which we will climb overnight. We then head for Ravenglass to climb Scafell Pike, before a night on the train up to Fort William to climb the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Some people estimate this is probably the equivalent of three half marathons on quite difficult terrain with not much sleep in between.”

Guy and Lucy climbed Snowdon last summer and have been practising as much as possible.  Lucy, a student at Cardiff Metropolitan University said “I love hiking, being active and a challenge.  I’ve climbed the Brecon Beacons several times at dawn to see the sunrise.  I just hope my dad can keep up with me!”
