Employees from Amazon’s Peterborough fulfilment centre volunteered with Mary’s Child, a charity based in the city that provides support to families and individuals facing difficult times. The charity offers its expertise in welfare benefits, family and housing law and a safe space for families and individuals to connect with their community.

Over two sessions, the Amazon volunteers worked alongside the team at Mary’s Child in the charity’s garden with weeding, tidying up the area and planting new flowers. The team also volunteered at the charity’s café to provide homecooked food to members of the community.

Gwyn Martyn was one of the Amazon employees who took part in the gardening. He said:

“I had a brilliant day with my colleagues at the Mary’s Child garden. It was great to meet some of the inspiring people working with the charity and hear more about the impact Mary’s Child has on real lives.”

Charlotte Avery-Walker, COO from Mary’s Child added: ‘’At Mary's Child we hugely appreciate the time that the volunteers spend with us, along with their endless energy and effort, both at our Community Cafe and in developing our Community Garden at The Goldhay Centre. The consistent support over the last 2 years has boosted the impact we have made across our community and for that we will always be appreciative."

Community donations and employee volunteering are just two of the ways Amazon supports the communities where it operates. Amazon co-founded the Multibank initiative with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown to support families in need. The initiative has donated more than 12 million surplus goods to over 800,000 families across Scotland, Wales, Greater Manchester, London, Tees Valley and Birmingham. This year, the Multibank will send 1 million orders to families across the UK.

Amazon has supported more than one million students across the UK with free STEM education programmes through Amazon Future Engineer and helps community organisations transport meals and other essentials to families in need through its pro bono logistics programme, Amazon Local Good.

Amazon partners with Comic Relief and is the official home of the charity’s iconic Red Nose. Together with its employees, customers, and partners, Amazon has raised over £4.8 million to fund projects that support people across the UK, and around the world.
