Peterborough Cathedral organ accompanied by a full orchestra for summer concert

Peterborough Cathedral’s organ will be having a starring role this month as part of the City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra’s (CPSO) summer concert. It will be the first time the organ has been accompanied by a full orchestra since it was re-tuned to modern concert pitch more than a decade ago.

The CPSO summer concert ‘Organissimo!’ will be held at Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday 6th June 2026 at 7.00pm.

Deirdre Culloty, Chair of CPSO, said: “The splendid Cathedral organ provides the showpiece for this summer’s concert of popular classics. We are thrilled that acclaimed organ soloist David Humphreys will be joining us.

“David has spent over 15 years as a cathedral musician, including directing and accompanying Peterborough Cathedral’s choir, so it is our pleasure to be able to accompany him with our full orchestra supporting a rousing evening of music.”

Having studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the University of Cambridge, David is now committed to developing the next generation of young musicians; he founded Peterborough Cathedral’s highly successful Youth Choir and has taught locally and for Oundle for Organists and the University of Cambridge.

Saint-Saëns famous Organ Symphony, composed in 1885, will be conducted by Björn Bantock with additional violin soloist Michal Cwizewicz.

Deirdre continued: “This concert has not just one, but two soloists and we are delighted to have Michal join us again following his wonderful ‘Lark Ascending’ at our autumn concert last year. We know the audience will be in for another treat.”

The evening also includes Beethoven's Overture for Goethe's play Egmont, depicting the struggle and victory against Spanish repression in the Eighty Years War.

Contrasting with this, Max Bruch's timeless first violin concerto is full of romantic expression, peaceful yet intense and great melodies.

Tickets for this concert are available now from the orchestra website: www.cpso.org.uk
