Olympic gymnast Louis Smith inspires Hampton Vale pupils during special Black History Month visit
Pupils at Hampton Vale Primary Academy in Peterborough enjoyed an unforgettable visit from Olympic gymnast Louis Smith as the school celebrated Black History Month and this year’s theme, Honouring Our Communities.

The Olympic medallist visited the school to lead a special assembly, sharing his inspiring journey from his early life to achieving success on the world stage. He spoke to pupils about his experiences as an elite gymnast, his Olympic achievements and his memorable victory on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.
The children were fascinated to hear about Louis’s career and the dedication, determination and hard work that helped him achieve his goals. A particular highlight was the opportunity to see his Olympic medals up close, giving pupils a unique insight into the remarkable achievements of someone from their local community.

Pupils had prepared a range of thoughtful questions ahead of the visit, demonstrating their curiosity and enthusiasm as they learnt more about Louis’s experiences. Across the school, children also marked the occasion through their lessons, creating beautiful artwork, portraits and heartfelt thank-you letters to express their appreciation for his visit.
The assembly provided a valuable opportunity to celebrate the achievements of an inspirational local figure while exploring the importance of representation, perseverance and ambition. It also encouraged children to recognise the positive contributions people make to their communities and to feel inspired to pursue their own dreams.
The visit was a fitting celebration of Black History Month, bringing learning to life and reminding pupils of the importance of recognising, celebrating and learning from the achievements of people within their local community.
