Hundreds gather in Peterborough to celebrate Lord Jagannath Chariot Festival

Cathedral Square came alive today as hundreds of devotees, families, residents, and visitors gathered for the annual Lord Jagannath Chariot Festival (Ratha Yatra), organised by the Bengali Sanskriti Club Peterborough. The vibrant procession celebrated devotion, unity, and community, drawing people from diverse backgrounds to participate in one of the world's oldest living spiritual traditions.

The festival began with prayers and devotional singing before the beautifully decorated chariot of Lord Jagannath, accompanied by Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, was ceremonially pulled through Peterborough city centre. Participants enthusiastically joined in the traditional rope-pulling ceremony, symbolising equality, collective service, and the Lord's blessings for all.

The procession filled Cathedral Square with the sounds of kirtan, traditional drumming, bells, and joyful chanting of "Jai Jagannath." Many passers-by stopped to witness the colourful celebration, ask questions about the festival, and join the procession.

A highlight of the event was the free distribution of prasadam - sanctified vegetarian food - which was served to hundreds of attendees. Volunteers worked throughout the evening to ensure everyone was warmly welcomed and received a meal, reflecting the festival's message that all are equal and everyone is welcome.

Throughout the celebration, families, children, and community members participated together in an atmosphere of peace, friendship, and cultural exchange. Visitors expressed appreciation for the opportunity to experience a unique spiritual and cultural tradition in the heart of Peterborough.

Speaking after the event, organisers said: "The Ratha Yatra is a festival of love, compassion, and unity. We are delighted to see people from all communities coming together to celebrate, pull the chariot, share prasadam, and experience the universal message of Lord Jagannath - that everyone is welcome."

The organisers thanked the dedicated volunteers, musicians, supporters, and all participants whose efforts made the celebration a success.
