Restaurant review: Happy days! Head for Ed's... and take it Easy
As eating out venues go, this week's is certainly a first - a service station just off the A1!
The Extra Services, at the junction with the A605, is home to quite an extensive range of food options, not least the newest... Ed’s Easy Diner which opened a month or so ago.
It is a brand that many people will be familiar with - and the fifties theme - as it has been around since the late 80s, just never in such a location.
There is no shortage of parking, obviously, and plenty of seating - at tables or in little four-seater booths, which are great for keeping the little ones captive.
The look - a 1950s American diner (as seen in Happy Days, Grease and the like) is as appealing as the musical backdrop - good old rock n roll.
And let’s not forget the menu... straight from the US of A. There is a variety of burgers and fries, naturally, hotdogs, salads, milk-shakes and ice creams; nothing fancy, but all very appetising.
My pulled pork brioche plate (£9.95) was a mouth-watering delight. A light-as-you-like slightly toasted bun that had great flavour on its own, and the filling was wonderfully juicy, sweet and smoky.
I liked the coleslaw - not too creamy but nice and crispy - and the onion rings packed plenty of flavour and fries were nothing special but adequate.
Donna had Ed’s Chicken Dijon salad (£7.95) - crispy, tasty chicken breast goujons on a bed of Romaine lettuce with a moreish honey and Dijon mustard dressing littered with tasty bacon bits. And the children’s menu puppy dog with a lettuce and cucumber salad (£4.65)went down well too as did the junior sundaes (£1.95) - two scoops with a sauce topping - from the same menu.
We also munched through a couple of very doughy warm waffles with a scoop of ice cream and pot of sweet, sticky maple syrup (£4.95) and washed it all down a couple of cokes (with free refills).
A nice atmosphere, decent food and friendly service... happy days indeed.
