Cllr Steve Allen, the city’s cabinet member for culture, wants to see the return of “great events” to the city’s large green space which has previously hosted the likes of JLS and Bryan Adams.

The Embankment is set to be a hub of activity in the coming years, with a new Peterborough university and Peterborough United stadium earmarked nearby, while there are plans for a bridge over the river to the Fletton Quays development.

While the large expansion has led to fears that much of the Embankment will be lost, Cllr Allen said there will be a large amount of space left and a new audience to tap into.

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph about the city’s new Culture Strategy, he said: “There have been in the past great events at the Embankment.

“Before Covid I was speaking to officers about revitalising those opportunities.

“I know City Culture Peterborough with the Key Theatre as its hub would be very interested in putting events on at the Embankment. It’s a great open space but fell by the wayside.

“We had the Willow Festival and great concerts. Let’s get those back.

“The strategy talks about engaging young people, but if you put on a great concert on the Embankment you will also engage with parents and grandparents.

“A lot of people have some concern about the Embankment being built on with the university, but that’s a plus as you’ll have new customers which will view that as their area and want to engage.

“The new Posh stadium will also have a concert hall. These will revitalise the whole area and a bridge with Fletton Quays will link the two.”
