The award is the only one at the exhibition that puts the votes in the hands of the public, and with over 200 votes Gareth swept up 10 per cent of the poll. He received his cheque from Richard Hunt, director of culture at Vivacity.

This year saw 400 artists competing for their place in the exhibition, with 76 successful artworks chosen by this year’s judging panel: Sarah Brown, programme curator at Leeds Art Gallery, printmaker Dale Deverux Barker and Yasmin Canvin, director of Fermynwoods Contemporary Art.

The Open Exhibition runs until May 28 at the City Gallery, Peterborough Museum, Priestgate, from 10am-5pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
