Underwood leads the COPS gold rush with a high five

They had 40 swimmers taking part and between them they won 36 gold, 33 silver and 30 bronze medals.

Leading the gold rush was nine year-old Jack Underwood who took five gold medals in the 50m fly, backstroke and freestyle, and the 200m freestyle and backstroke events. He also got the silver medal in the 200m breaststroke.

Matthew Cussell (15) claimed a dozen medals including four gold medals in the 50m breaststroke, 100m free, 200m fly and individual medley. He added silver medals in the 50m and 100m fly, 100m individual medley, 200m free and backstroke and bronze medals in the 50m free, 100m and 200m breaststroke.

Rhiannon Loutit (15) also took four gold medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, 100m back and 200m free, silver medals in the 50m back and 100m individual medley and bronze in the 100m free and 200m breaststroke.

Another four-times gold medallist was 10 year-old Keiran Griffin. He touched first in the 100m free, back and breaststroke and the 200m individual medley events and also won a silver in the 200m freestyle event.

Several COPS swimmers came home with a brace of gold medals.

They were: Ella Normington (10) - gold medals 50m fly and 200m breaststroke plus silvers in the 200m free and individual medley and bronze in the 100m breaststroke and 400m freestyle; Thomas Bromley (13) - gold medals 50m free and fly plus silvers in the 100m and 200m free and bronze in the 100m backstroke; Jemima Tuffnell (11) - gold medals 50m back and 200m freestyle plus silvers in the 50m free and 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 400m freestyle; Chloe Pratt (18) - gold medals 50m fly and 200m free plus silvers in the 100m free and individual medley and bronze in the 50m breastroke; Bethany Pratt (14) - gold medals 50m and 100m free plus bronze in the 200m freestyle; Kate Mcloughlin (13) - gold medals 100m and 200m breaststroke.

Two 11 year-old swimmers won one medal of each colour. Eleanor Byrne won gold in the 100m individual medley, silver in the 100m back and bronze in the 100m free while Joel Coulson took gold in the 50m fly, silver in the 100m back and bronze in the 200m freestyle.

COPS other gold medal winners were: Briony Burmby (12) plus three silvers; Isla Fulluck (9) plus two silvers and one bronze; Alex Harlow (9) plus two silvers; Erivan Hamid (12) plus one silver; Joshua Martin (10) plus one silver; Nia Griffiths (14) plus three bronze; Leah Dorman (9) plus two bronze; Chloe Elliot (12) plus one bronze; Stan Scarborough (10) plus one bronze; Poppy Slater (11) plus one bronze; Sophie Griffin (12);

Other COPS medal winners: Mia Turvey (10) three silvers; Jamie Peacock (10) two silvers and one bronze; Emily McFarlane (11) two silvers; Joshua Smith (11) two silvers; Lilly Borgognoni (13) one silver and one bronze; Safford Hewitt-White (10) one silver and one bronze; Ruby Hunnybun (11) three bronze; Lucie Creedon (10) two bronze; Sophie Galjaard (13) two bronze; Kirsten Loutit (12) one bronze; Taylor Wilson (12) one bronze.

Also swimming for COPS were: Isabel Ilett (12), Charlotte Martin (14), Matthew McLoughlin (9), Ellie Spencer (10), Joshua Spencer (11) and Ismail Tajer (10).

Assistant COPS coach Debbie Standish-Leigh said: “There were some very good swims at this meet, particularly for those who have got their first times on the board.

“With 93 new personal best times being set it shows that our swimmers are continuing to improve even as we approach the end of the season.”
