Rohan’s return to Peterborough Panthers has been thrown into doubt, Ostergaard relieved his hero is on the mend after a brush with Covid

The return of Aussie ace Rohan Tungate to Peterborough Panthers for the 2021 season has been thrown into doubt by the plans of Polish League clubs to restrict their riders to competing in just one other league.

Tungate is current a member of a team in Polish and Swedish speedway. If he stays in Poland for 2021, which is likely given the high profile of the sport in the country, he would have to give up ambitions of a return to Alwalton.

The 30 year-old endured a dificult 2019 in a Panthers team that struggled at the foot of the Premiership tabel, but was tipped to improve massively in this year’s campaign. The city side were hoping to re-sign their entire 2020 teamfor 2021.

Panthers officials were involved in a zoom meeting with fellow Premiership chiefs on Monday morning to discuss the plans of Polish top flight clubs to restrict riders to only one other league.

Meanwhile Panthers favourite Ulrich Ostergaard is relieved to see his idol, four-time world champion Hans Nielsen on the road to recovery.

Nielsen, who was a guest at his testimonial at the Showground, tested positive for Covid-19 in Poland at the Speedway of Nations last month.

Thankfully the legend is now back in Denmark getting over the illness and is expected to be fully fit soon.

Said Ostergaard: “When I started out racing in Denmark, Hans was the one rider I looked up to and wanted to emulate even when I rode the 50cc bikes.

“I guess he was the one reason I decided to sacrifice everything and make the move to England to become a better rider. I remember him being so professional and his equipment was always top quality.

“Most Danes nowadays are always looking at sponsors the right way and always try and give something back and Hans and Erik (Gundersen) were the real inspirations in my era of starting out.

“Even now I know how important looking right and the bikes looking right kind of give you the edge over other riders. Hans was always immaculate and such an inspiration for so many Danes who have ridden in England.”
