There is no doubt who the local top dogs are in Counties 1 Midlands East as second-placed Stamford raced to a 39-3 win at struggling Peterborough Lions on Saturday.

Freddie Chapman picked up two tries with Ed Cox, Harley Riches and Lewis Lancaster also touching down. Frazer Hutton kicked the rest of the points. Will Moore booted the Lions’ points to bring up his half century for the season.

Lions are at fellow strugglers Stockwood Park on Saturday when Stamford host Towcestrians.

Borough are hoping home comforts will help to turn their season around. The city side lost 27-25 in a Regional 2 Midlands East fixture at Kettering on Saturday when a string of close refereeing calls went against them.

The defeat leaves Borough rooted to the bottom of the table after six games, but only two have been at home.

And it’s a big one at Fengate next Saturday (3pm) as next-to-bottom Leicester Forest are the visitors.

Borough were quickly 10-0 down at Kettering, but drew level with a try from Will Manning and a penalty and conversion from Byron Van Uden.

A Michael Teague try and a second Van Uden penalty gave Borough the lead, but Kettering raced clear again before Ian Williams crossed late on for the city side.

Borough director of rugby Shane Manning said: “We just can't get the rub of the green. I couldn’t understand more than a few of the referee's decisions and they did influence the result which was very disappointing.”

OUNDLE

Even when below their best Oundle were too strong for Bedford Athletic as hooker Toby Snelling bagged a hat-trick of tries in a 28-7 win. Wing wizard Logan Noble also claimed a try with Ben Young kicking all four conversions for a team who have won all six Regional 1 South East games.

Second-paced Oundle host bottom club Amersham & Chiltern on Saturday (2pm).

LADIES/JUNIORS

Kian Herring scored the try as Borough U14 boys lost 38-5 to Brackley in the East Midlands Cup.
