More FA competition glory for Peterborough Sports. Yaxley lose a 10-goal game, defeats for Stamford, Wisbech and Spalding
Last weekend Sports beat higher level Boston United in the FA Cup and today (September 29) they saw off Sutton Coldfield Town from the same Evo Stik Southern League Division 2-1 in the first FA Trophy match in the club’s history at the Bee Arena.

Hide AdCentre-back Paul Malone was the unlikely scoring hero for Sports. He opened the scoring in the first-half and bagged the winner 15 minutes from time afer Coldfield had equalised.
Coldfield were desperately unlucky not to have won the game let alone draw.
The first half hour was fairly even, until Sports took the lead when a free kick found its way to Malone who lashed home with his right foot from 15 yards.

Hide AdSports seemed to be suffering something of an FA Cup hangover and struggled to raise themselves in front of a smaller crowd than recently (133). It was no surprise when Ryan Nesbitt poked home an equaliser on 54 minutes. They then saw an effort come back off the underside of the bar and were generally in charge until Sports made a couple of late changes.
The winning goal arrived when Malone powered home a header from a Lewis Hilliard corner on 74 minutes. There was still time for a few late flurries in the Sports box but they held out for a less than convincing win and a home tie with Cambridge City next round.
Sports’ home FA Cup third qualifying round tie at home to Chorley next Saturday (October 6) will be streamed live by the BBC. The match against the leaders of the National North Division now kicks off at 12.30pm.

Hide AdElsewhere it was Evo Stik League misery for local clubs as Yaxley, Stamford, Wisbech and Spalding were all beaten.
Yaxley were chasing a third straight win in Division One Central of the Southern League but crashed 7-3 at home to an Aylesbury United team who had won just one game previously all season.
It was 4-3 at the break at In2itive Park with Ross Watson, Joe Butterworth and James Ward scoring for the Cuckoos in front of a gate of 111. Yaxley are now 11th.

Hide AdStamford, Wisbech and Spalding didn’t manage a goal between them in Division One East of the Northern Premier Division with Spalding’s 4-0 home defeat to a strong Morpeth team leaving them without a league win all season and one place off the bottom of the table.
