RUGBY UNION: Late De lay Ray try seals victory for Lions

The city side entered the final stages 17-13 down, but a tapped penalty anad some fine passing out wide enabled De lay Ray Veenendaal to scorch over in the corner. Kaz Henderson landed the conversion to give Lions a 20-17 win.

Due to injuries Lions were forced to make several changes for the match, Tom Lewis and Sam Crooks came into the second row, Conor Crown started at six and Ben Taylor at fly half.

Despite early Bromsgrove pressure Lions registered the first points after 15 minutes when the home side were penalised for not releasing on their own 22, Henderson kicked the three points.

Lions extended their lead when Bromsgrove tried to run a free-kick from their own 22 and Ben Taylor charged down a kick and scored wide out for an 8-0 lead, but Bromsgrove then used their heavier pack to score two converted tries from rolling mauls leaving them 14-8 ahead at the break.

The second half started with Lions recycling the kick-off and driving into the opposition half. Good breaks by Tom Lewis and Veenendaal led to Lions winning a line-out in the Bromsgrove 22, from which Chris Cutts crashed over in the corner to to bring Lions to within a point.

Bromsgrove then enjoyed a period of pressure in the Lions 22 and passed up on two penalties for not releasing to kick for the corner. Three Lions players picked up yellow cards, but the home side only managed one further penalty score and as their forwards tired, Lions finished strongly and claimed a dramatic win.

Lions remain fifth in the table with 13 wins from 23 matches.
