Macleod was a member of the Team GB women’s hockey team that struck gold last month in Brazil and she gave a motivational speech detailing the intense preparation and mental approach of the squad as they took charge of the tournament.

Macleod made her international debut in 2003 and was a member of the Great Britain team that won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Both of her Olympic medals were on display during the lunch.

Iain Crighton, chairman of the Peterborough SportsAid Foundation, said: “I was particularly impressed by the commitment of Hannah to her chosen sport and the way she endeared herself to an enthusiastic audience.

“Winning a gold medal at the Rio Olympics must have been a truly moving experience.”

The latest recipient of a SportsAid grant was kick-boxing talent Jaden Harris, who is a British and European champion and won five gold medals at the World Championships in Portugal last November. She returns next month to defend those titles.

The latest SportsAid lunch was supported by Dalrod Limited, the specialist drainage company based in Peterborough.
