A staggering 562 runners in a virtual race!

The popular annual Frostbite League is a Covid casualty of 2020-21, but a ‘Virtual League’ is running in its place and a staggering total of 562 seniors took part in the first round!

The idea is that athletes run five miles on a course of their choice and submit their times to the organisers.

Huntingdon AC dominated the opening event with Christopher Smith (26:43), Martin Amos (27:17) and Ty Farrer (27:21) filling the first three places with Paul Vernon of Ramsey in fourth (27:50).

Steve Wilkinson of Peterborough Nene Valley and Yaxley’s Danny Snipe both recorded the same time of 29:06 for joint seventh place.

Yaxley’s David Whitwell clocked 29:30 for ninth position.

Riverside’s Johanna O’Regan was first lady home in 30.44 with Eye’s Sam Cullen the first local lady finishing fifth in 32:54.

Kayleigh Draper of Yaxley was next with a time of 33:20.

Peterborough Nene Valley’s Maddy Long was eighth in 34.58, and Kelly Maddy of Thorney was just one second slower.

The junior competition run over 1.5 miles attracted 127 entrants.

Ethan Nottle of Werrington and Yaxley’s Jack Brown tied for sixth position with times of 8:44 for the best local finish. For the girls, Werrington sisters Erin and Olivia Walker finished second and third in times of 9:11 and 9:14 respectively.

Eye Community Runners fielded an incredible 97 athletes across the two races with 71 competing for Werrington Joggers.

Yaxley Runners were the highest placed local senior team in fourth followeed by March (fifth) and Werrington (sixth). Hunts AC were the overall winners.

Hunts AC also won the juior event with Thorney fourth and Werrington in fifth.

The next round takes place on the weekend of December 12/13.
