Pool ace Gray pots one of the best tournament wins of his career

Local pool ace Mark Gray overcame the toughest field he’s faced on tour to win another major title.

Gray competed in the International Rules Pool Over 40s Tour at Franks Pool Hall in Hatfield and came out on top of a 64-man field to claim his third win from four events on this tour. It was also his sixth title of the season on all tours.

His latest success came in a 64-man field with a straight knockout race to six frames in all rounds bar the final.

Gray, who is now 53, beat Maidenhead pro Dylan Leary 6-4 and Richard Jones from Cambs 6-3. Next up was Jimmy Gillespie from Newark and again Gray won 6-3. Former world champion John Roe from Peterborough was Gray’s next victim in the quarter finals after a comeback from 5-3 down to win 6-5 with a break and clearance in the final frame.

Gray then beat former pro Lewis Roberts from Stamford 6-4 in the semi-final and then a current pro Eddie Barker was seen off 7-5 in the final from 5-4 down as the Bourne Snooker Centre star picked up the £550 first prize.

Gray said; “it was probably the toughest field I’ve ever faced on this tour and I beat top names all the way through from round one to the final, so it must go down as one of my best tournament wins ever on the English pool scene.”
