Perhaps the best known former junior to come through the Joggers’ ranks was James McCrae.

As a Werrington youngster he made a name for himself over all distances from 400m to 1500m, before moving on to Nene Valley.

McCrae now runs for Sheffield club Hallamshire AC, and is now establishing himself on the national stage, reaching the final of the British 1,500m Championship in 2019

“James McCrae started with us as a 10 year old,” said Werrington club chairman Tim Cook.

“We have never stood in the way of youngsters making progress, especially on the track which is not something we particularly take part in.

“We have always had good relationships with the coaches at the now combined PANVAC (Peterborough and Nene Valley Athletic Club) and James is an absolute credit to himself and someone we are proud to say started with us.”

Werrington also have a good number of talented runners who’ve stayed loyal through thick and thin.

Club captain Malc Jacklin has been a fixture for longer than anyone cares to remember while Ann Wood is now in the over 55s category and has rarely been beaten in her age group for many years.

Jeff Lucas, now in his 40s, has been there since he was 20 and in 2019 clocked a new marathon best of 2:44.24.

And long-term member Martin Stevens has remained with the club despite a move to Norfolk.

He has run countless marathons in a Werrington vest with a best time of 2:44.43 which he set in London back in 2009.

The late Dougie Linton remains Werrington Joggers only England International.

As a veteran he ran for his country in home international fixtures as an over 60. One of his national vests is framed in his memory by the club. He still holds a number of club records, including a fine 1.21.38 for the half marathon as an over 60.

* The club meets every Tuesday evening (juniors 18:00-19:00, seniors 18:45 for 19:00) at the Werrington Sports Centre, and after a brief communal warm up they split into groups for runs of various distances and speeds.

Each week nominated committee members are responsible for new runners.

Sunday morning long runs are also a feature of the club. Details from [email protected].
