Outstanding debut at English National Championships for Deepings Swimming Club star
Deepings Swimming Club's Oliver Clarke delivered an outstanding debut at the Swim England National Summer Championships, reaching two national finals and finishing in the top 10 in both of his events.
Clarke qualified for the prestigious championships in two events, the 100m and 200m breaststroke, competing in the boys' 13/14 age group against the country's best young swimmers.
Simply qualifying represented a major achievement for both swimmer and club. Clarke was the first Deepings’ swimmer to compete at the Swim England National Summer Championships for four years.
In the 200m breaststroke, Clarke progressed from the heats to his first National Final, where he finished 10th in 2:44.27.
Two days later, he was back racing in the 100m breaststroke and once again earned his place in the final. He produced another excellent performance to again finish 10th in a time of 1:15.02.
Clarke said: “I am extremely proud of my achievements at my first Nationals. I pushed myself as hard as I could and finished in the top 10 in England in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke.
“This is down to the huge help from all the coaches. It was an unforgettable experience and I hope I have inspired all Deepings swimmers by showing what can be achieved.”
Jamie Irvine, head coach at Deepings added: “Oliver has had a fantastic year, from his success at Counties level through to his excellent Regional performances, which ultimately earned him his place at Nationals. Qualifying for Nationals is a significant achievement in itself, so to reach two finals from two events is a remarkable accomplishment and a real testament to Oliver’s mindset and ability to perform on the big stage.
“Since joining Deepings nearly seven years ago, Oliver has shown continuous progress, supported throughout by various members of our coaching team along his journey. He is ever-present at training, always keen to take on feedback, and consistently gives his all to make himself better. It has been brilliant to see that hard work come together this season and culminate in his National qualification.
I’m looking forward to seeing what next season brings for Oliver and for the rest of our Deepings swimmers.”
