Local pool ace made it a 'Gray' day for the opposition once more

The Bourne Snooker Centre professional won the first event of the year on the International Rules Pool Amateur Tour at the 147 Club in Leicester.

Gray came out on top of a field of 96, although as the number one ranked player he was seeded through to the last 64 where the tournament turned into a straight race-to-six-frame knockout.

Gray secured wins against Liam Mills (6-1) and Justin Wynne (6-2) before coming back from the brink of defeat against his best mate on tour Richard Jones from Cambridge 6-5. Gray then saw off Coventry’s Matt Peel 6-2 in the last eight and John Egan from Ipswich 6-4 in the semi-final.

In the final Gray beat ex-snooker pro Rob Donkin from Essex, taking the last three frames to turn 3-3 into 6-3.

Gray took home a first prize of £1,050.

Peterborough’s Sean Hackett lost in the last 16 and Lewis Roberts from Stamford, who had lost to Wynne early on, recovered to win the plate event. Gray said: “It was great to get a big tournament win so early in the year. It was a little unexpected as it’s bound to be difficult to replicate my results from last season. I’ll take it one tournament at a time and see where it gets me.”
