A long, arduous cross country slog has finally come to an end

​Fourteen Peterborough youngsters travelled to Nottingham as a long and arduous cross country season reached its conclusion with the English Schools Championships at Wollaton Park.

​The Cambridgeshire & Lincolnshire county teams included 12 athletes from Peterborough & Nene Valley AC along with two from Thorney Runners.

Team members had fought their way through local championships and county championships for the honour of representing their county.

In the senior boys race Harry Hewitt & Seb Beedell were the second and third placed scorers for their Lincolnshire team, finishing 54th and 74th respectively in a 292-strong field.

Ted Ash was the leading Lincolnshire runner in the intermediate boys race finishing in 57th spot.

Outstanding prospect Louie Hemmings ran his first championship race as a junior boy.

And despite being one of the youngest runners on show he placed 80th and second Lincolnshire scorer.

William Harris finished 307th.

Crossing the line in 159th place, Erin Cox was the third Lincolnshire girl home in the senior race.

Lottie Hemmings placed 242nd while Evie Hemmings finished 263rd, with intermediate girl Faith Perkins 311th.

From the Cambridgeshire contingent the two Thorney athletes Tobias Goodwin and Rosie Ackerman were the best placed local runners.

Goodwin was 170th in the intermediate boys race, with Ackerman the 202nd junior girl home.

PANVAC's Felix Bowling finished as the 224th intermediate boy, while team-mate Elizabeth Eames was one place higher crossing the line as the 223rd senior girl.

Ruby Hynes finished 296th intermediate girl.

MARATHON MANIA

Eye Community Runner Andy Short has joined PANVAC's James Sadlier in completing all six of the world's major marathons.

Short's mission began in 2017 when he went round London in 3:22.52.

His travels took him to New York, Chicago, Boston and Berlin, and he completed the job in Japan when he ran the Tokyo Marathon in a time of 3:47.26.

Dates have been set for the 2023 Peterborough 5k Grand Prix series. The first race is at Eye on Wednesday, June 14.

Entries will be taken for the first race from June 1 at www.peterboroughgpseries.org.uk.

The best three results count towards the individual prizes.

Andrew Jakeman of March won the 2022 Grand Prix series after winning three of the races.

Rachel Doherty of Higham AC was the ladies champion.

There are also numerous age group categories.
