CRICKET: Peterborough Town pair Alan Tait and Jim Wyllie were presented with the Ronson Merit Table awards for batting and wicket-keeping. Tony Edwards (Upwood) collected the bowling prize.

HOCKEY: Youngster Gale Prosser scored twice as Saracens beat Cambridge University 3-1. Ruth Shorrock also scored.

BADMINTON: Jane Briggs and Brian Hawes starred as Peterborough City beat Tech College 6-3 in a Hunts & Peterborough Division One match.

POSH: Dave Gregory was outstanding as Posh came from behind to beat Grimsby 3-1 in a Division Three match at London Road to maintain an unbeaten record in 1977. Gregory, Ian Nimmo and Keith Oakes scored the goals.

FOOTBALL: David Chapman (2), Glen Judge and Mark Martin scored as St John Fisher claimed a shock 4-1 win over Whittlesey Blue Star in a Hunts League Shield semi-final.

HOCKEY: Future Great Britain Olympian Paul Barber scored Peterborough Town’s goal in a 1-1 East Division One draw with Wisbech.

POSH: Pino Nardino and Tony Cliss scored in a 2-0 youth team win at Spurs.

ATHLETICS: Nicola Hurn (Westwood House) and Hazel Farrington (King’s) were the local winners in the Cambs Schools Cross Country Championships.

POSH: A week after an heroic FA Cup win at Second Division leaders Notts County, Posh were beaten 1-0 at home by Doncaster in a Division Four promotion battle. Team: Waugh, McVay, Gynn, Slack, Slough, Quow, Kellock, Cooke, Hodgson, Robson. Sub used: Syrett.

HOCKEY: Goalkeeper John Hughes was superb for Peterborough Town in a 0-0 East Division One draw at Cambridge Nomads. Mick Ward, Tony Hansen and Neville Keir also played well.

FOOTBALL: A resurgence in form for Peterborough League Division One side Mitchells was put down to the arrivals of 26-goal Franco Piergianni, teenager Phil Hastings and former Posh player Tony Senior.

SQUASH: Eastfield beat title-chasing Portugal Place 3-2 in Cambs Division One. Their winners were Steve Gray, Paul Gilbert and Bob Green.

DARTS: Northfields B refused to continue a league match at the Crown and Ancor in Deeping as customers playing the fruit machine were making too much noise.

POSH: Club physio Bill Harvey was hailed a hero after saving the life of full-back Steve Collins who had swallowed his tongue in a derby game against Northampton Town. An Ian Benjamin goal won the game for Cobblers who moved 20 points clear at the top of Division Four.

ICE HOCKEY: Doug McEwen scored his 50th goal of the season as Peterborough Pirates bashed Bournemouth 19-6 in the Heineken Premier Division. McEwen and Todd Bidner scored four goals apiece with Garry Unger claiming nine assists.

HOCKEY: Saracens moved into second place in the Godfrey Davis Invitation League with a 3-1 win over Welwyn Garden City. Carrie Staley, Michelle Hall and Karen Yeoman scored the goals.

CRICKET: Peterborough’s indoor team beat Wellingborough by 37 runs in a National League fixture. Team: Ged McDougall, John McDougall, Richie Baines, Bob Milne, Adrian Cade, Alan McQueen, Richard Johnson,Andy Vernum, Andy Walker, Gary Whitbread and Glynn Starr.

SQUASH: Phil Godfrey, Steve Wilson, Bob Wilkinson and Gerry Armstrong won as City & Counties beat Stamford 4-1 in a key Peterborough Premier Division match. Jim Daintith was the only City loser.

POSH: Manager Barry Fry claimed to have offers from Premier League clubs for goalkeeper Bart Griemink, centre-back Andy Edwards and young winger Mark McKeever.

ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates were crushed 16-0 at home by Telford in the Premier League and then 17-0 away in the return fixture four days later.

FOOTBALL: PSL beat unbeaten Broadgate 2-1 in a PFA Sunday Senior Cup semi-final. Billy Dunn and Paul Lemmon scored for PSL after Trevor Smith had opened the scoring for Broadgate. The losers had Darren Paling and Mick Jeary sent off.

RUGBY UNION: Borough delivered a fine display of running rugby to beat West Norfolk 21-6. Tim Davidson, Hywel Thomas and Chris Templeman scored tries with skipper Chris Jones on form with the boot.

POSH: Wrexham beat Posh 4-2 in an FA Cup fourth round tie at London Road to deny Barry Fry a return trip to Birmingham City. Ken Charlery and Carl Griffiths twice put Posh ahead. Former Posh loanee Kevin Russell scored twice for Wrexham. “There was too much pansying about at the back,” moaned Fry.
