SPEEDWAY: Panthers stayed in Elite League title contention by walloping Eastbourne 61-32 at Alwalton. Hans Andersen and Niels Kristian Iversen top scored with 14 points apiece.

FOOTBALL: A Peterborough League Rep XI beat Leverington 7-1 in a memorial game for club secretary Neville Missin. George Goodayle (3), Mark Baines (2), Richie Baines and Kev Richardson scored the goals, but manager Stephen ‘Tommy’ Cooper was fuming at several players who didn’t turn up. ‘It was rank bad manners,” Cooper moaned.

ROWING: Local boy James Fox won a hat-trick of races at Peterborough City’s Summer Regatta.

ATHLETICS: Dan Evans, son of Boston United FC manager Steve Evans, set a 100m record at the Great Yarmouth Boys meeting with a time of 13.0.

POSH: Trevor Benjamin scored his first goals for 10 months as Macclesfield were beaten 3-1 in League Two.

ATHLETICS: Cat Foley of Nene Valley Harriers won the Peterborough Grand Prix series with a race to spare.

FOOTBALL: Stamford manager Steve Evans signed former Chelsea striker David Speedie.

GOLF: Greenkeeper Graeme Macdonald completed a hat-trick of local club championship titles by adding the Thorpe Wood crown to his wins at Milton and Orton Meadows. Macdonald won at Thorpe Wood with rounds of 72 & 74.

SPEEDWAY: Jason Crump top scored with 13 points and set a new track record, but Panthers still lost 51-46 at London Lions in a KO Cup tie.

SWIMMING: Jody Cundy from Wisbech won a Paralympic gold medal and set a world record in the 100m butterfly final in Atlanta.

POSH: Barry Fry’s side lost the first game under his management, 1-0 at Bristol Rovers. Posh: Sheffield, Boothroyd, Clark, Heald, Welsh, Willis, O’Connor, Ebdon, Houghton, Charlery, Farrell.Subs used Basham, McGleish, Grazioli.

CRICKET: Northants Premier Division leaders Peterborough Town suffered a shock six-wicket defeat at Old Wellingburians after slumping from 98-2 to 126-9. Ajaz Akhtar made 64.

POSH: Youngsters Adam Drury and Niall Inman signed new 3-year contracts.

CRICKET: Steve Halkyard of Orton Park claimed all 10 Stamford Town wickets for 34 runs in a friendly.

SPEEDWAY: Middlesbrough Tigers beat PeterboroughPanthers 50-28 in the battle of the ‘Big Cats’ in the National League. Nigel Flatman (11) top scored for Panthers.

CRICKET: Pace ace Neil Taylor claimed his 100th wicket of the season and skipper Alan Swann struck 72 as Peterborough Town drew at Old Northamptonians in the Northants Premier Division.

FOOTBALL: Former Posh full-back Eric Brookes moved from Perkins to Peterborough League rivals Ortonians.

CRICKET: Tony Howorth took 7-24 with his leg breaks as Peterborough Town beat Grantham by three wickets in South Lincs Division One. Keith Barrett (63no) and Mick Pighills (53no) put on an unbroken 125 for the second wicket as Market Deeping also beat Grantham by nine wickets.

ATHLETICS: Little Tony Jarman won two events as Peterborough AC won a Southern League meeting in Portsmouth.

POSH: Les Lawrence scored the only goal of the Maunsell Cup Final against Kettering, his fourth goal of the pre-season campaign.

AUGUST 1986

MOTORSPORT: There was chaos at Alwalton as track marshals went on strike claiming their lives were in danger when banger divers went on a raceabout. “These people are like wild animals,” said chief marshal Ray Brown.

POSH: Substitute John Cozens came off the bench to score twice in a 3-2 win at Reading in a League Cup tie. Jeff Lee also converted a penalty as Posh came from 2-0 down.

GOLF: Heather and Harry Davies won the Burghley Park Mixed Open.

ROWING: A ladies novice four from Peterborough City of Jo James, Shirley Ulliott, Julia Hurford and Marilyn Parsons won a prestigious race in Stourbridge.

GOLF: Stamford’s Mark James claimed his first win as a professional when taking the Midland PGA event at Streetley, Birmingham.

CYCLING: Veteran Peterborough CC star Bernard Kelly won the club’s Cashmore Cup after covering 222.5 miles in 12 hours.

FOOTBALL: Former Posh star Bert Murray signed for Spalding United.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers suffered their heaviest defeat of the British League season, 56-22 at Workington.
