MINOR COUNTIES: Butt out to the last ball of the day

Cambridgeshire lost star batsman Asim Butt to the last ball to spoil a decent first day (July 31) in their Minor Counties Championship clash with Bedfordshire at March Town CC.

Butt, who claimed a rapid century for Peterborough Town 24 hours earlier, had stroked five boundaries in his 33 before his departure which left Cambs on 53-1 in pursuit of Beds’ 260.

Beds’ innings had been built around a patient 79 from Andy Reynoldson and 55 from former Cambs opener Ben Howgego.

Slow bowler John Arksey bagged five wickets for Cambs with seamers Joe Dawborn (Peterborough) and Sam Rippington (Wisbech) collecting two apiece.

Captain Lewis Bruce of Peterborough Town bowled 34 overs and returned figures of 1-83.

The Eastern Division match resumes today (August 1, 11am) and finishes tomorrow.
